After completing my natural building courses and gaining hands-on experience in Himachal and Uttarakhand, I decided to take on the challenge of redesigning my room using mud plasters. It was time to bid farewell to the boring PVC panels and the lifeless cement plaster that had dominated my space for far too long. Also, I felt like it no longer matches my energy.

With a design idea sketched on my phone, I began the project by removing the old PVC panels single-handedly and chipping away the cement plaster. It was a messy job, but I was excited about the possibilities that lay ahead.

Once the room was stripped down, I gathered all the necessary materials like lime, mud, sand, fresh cow dung, etc and started experimenting with different ratios to create plaster samples. I wanted to find the perfect mixture that would bring out the natural beauty of the mud and provide a durable finish for my room.

The project unfolded in stages, each requiring careful attention to detail. First, I installed a Sarkanda stem ceiling, adding a touch of rustic charm to the space. Then came the electrical work, ensuring that my room would be both beautiful and functional.

Next, it was time for lime slaking and the application of the mud plaster. This was the most labour-intensive part of the project, but I relished the opportunity to get my hands dirty and connect with the materials I was using.

Finally, it was time to add the finishing touches. I mixed up a lime paint for a limewash by adding natural coffee powder for the rose pink tint and applied it to the walls, giving them a soft, natural glow. To complete the transformation, I installed lighting fixtures that I had made myself using leftover grass stems, adding a unique and sustainable touch to my room.

Now, my room is no longer a dull and lifeless space. It has been transformed into a natural and sustainable living area that reflects my passion for natural building. Every time I step into my mud room, I am reminded of the journey I took to create a space that is not only beautiful but also in harmony with the environment.
